Benefits of Digital Curation (Specifically Using Padlet)

Image
I must admit that I previously bookmarked any websites I found useful only to have them lost in a sea of bookmarks.  I had never actually been concerned about this however, as I never had a reason for needing to access valuable resources routinely in the future. As a secondary school teacher though, I may potentially be teaching the same content every year, or every few years. It is therefore incredibly important that I learn to not only save my resources but have them easily accessible so that I am not re-inventing the wheel every time I deliver the same content. Whilst I am still very fresh at using Padlet to create my digital curation, I can see great value in having a single location for all my sources and which also allows me to sort them, add titles and provide extra information.  It provides me with a single location where all by resources are stored in a neat and tidy manner.   I also wonder if Padlet can be used to help support the online learning of student...

Reflection Task 3: Presentations

Image
Welcome! In this week’s blog I am focusing on PowerPoint presentations and trying to elevate my existing (very minimal) knowledge. Microsoft PowerPoint I didn’t realise how interaction PowerPoint could be.   PowerPoint presentations can be used for simple information presentation, interactive questionnaires , 3D demonstrations and even used to create  videos .   I was already aware that PowerPoint presentations are completely customisation with options to modify the background, text, slide design, add additional features (images, music and video files) and slide transitions.   With limited experience of the Microsoft Suite, I believe all users could reasonably easy develop a basic slide presentation. Whilst presentations will generally have one author, if the presentation is uploading to a sharing database like Microsoft Teams, all ‘Team Members’ can have access to and modify the presentation. Within my classes, I frequently use basic PowerPoint presentations ...

Reflection Task 2: Digital Media

Image
Welcome to Week Four! I found this week’s content on digital media extremely valuable.   Not only did I learn how I could utilise such tools in my teaching but there were many links to some great websites/tools that I will be using in my future teaching.   Digital media that can be used within the classroom is extremely diverse and can range from pictures, audio files, and videos through to 3D images and panoramas.   The use of digital media within the classroom has been linked to increased engagement, assisting students in understanding difficult topics with multiple resources and helps to demonstrate and break down difficult topics   (National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, 2018) .   Pedagogical Affordances – Pictures This week I focused a lot on pictures as given my extremely limited skill level, I wanted to focus on the aspect of digital media that I would test run first.   I explored how I could utilise a range of picture...

Reflection Task 1: WEB SPACES

Reflection Introduction 👩 Welcome to my online blog.  Before we move any further, feel free to access my publications below: My Website - Google Sites Week 1 Reflective Blog - Blogger My Wiki - Microsoft Teams Wiki Overview of Google Sites So far within this course I have been learning how to use various forms of ICT.   This has been quite daunting to me as my relationship with technology is quite strained! I have engaged a lot with Google Sites in making my own website as I see a lot of value for this within the classroom.   Google Sites is easy to use and customize and as such, a very valuable resource.   Starting from the homepage of Google Sites, a new site can be created with the click of a button and can either be blank or with a pre-set structure.  Customization is simple with pre-set or custom themes.  This can be enhanced with pre-set layouts or the manual addition of easily selectable components with each section able to be moved around the s...

Week 1 - Technology in the Classroom

Technology in the Classroom Me as a Teacher As I begin EDSE20016, I am incredibly anxious about my ability to understand and engage with content.  Whilst I understand the benefits that ICTs/technology can have in a classroom, I have been left behind with technology and know that I am going to have to work very hard to get myself up to a standard level of expertise.  I most certainly understand the importance and value in utilising digital technologies within the classroom with current day learners and am open to learning the new skills so that I can improve my teaching practices. When I was in school (many years ago), teaching was done in a lecture format where the class was spoken at.  Computer classes were very limited, if available at all.  ICTs were not embedded in the curriculum as much as they are now.  This style of teaching was in my toolkit when I began my Masters of Teaching however as I have been obtaining more experience in the classroom I find mysel...
